Grub?

Houston is known for its expansive foodie scene. This FAQ will focus on mostly nearby spots where we love to eat, but if there is a specific type of food you are looking for, just ask us and we can point you in the right direction.

Barbecue

Ya ain’t had barbecue unless you have had it in Texas, and Houston has some great spots that live up to that claim:

  • The Pit Room

  • Truth Barbecue

  • Pinkerton’s Barbecue

Connor Woods will be taking some people on a little bit of a BBQ Tour on Friday so you may want to check with him before going anywhere in particular!

TexMex

Now, there is traditional Mexican food and there is TexMex. Both are wonderful and that is not to say you cannot get a lot of traditional Mexican cuisine at a TexMex restaurant - but the clarification is worth noting. This list serves as a number of popular TexMex specific spots, which is what most people are looking for.

  • Original Ninfas on Navigation

  • El Tiempo on Navigation (same family as Ninfas but the family had a split and opened a rival tex-mex joint across the street)

  • Lupe Tortillas

Crawfish Season kicks off!

It’s crawfish season opening week and Houston is second only to Louisiana when it comes to expertise in boiling up some mud bugs. If this tickles your fancy here are a few staples:

  • Boil House (Heights)

  • The Cajun Stop

  • BB’s (more of a local chain but does good year-round crawfish)

Vietnamese

  • Roostar: Bahn mi in Eastwood

  • Huynh: Vietnamese in EaDo

  • Hughies in the Heights

Little of something for everyone (food halls, Burgers, Pizza)

  • Truck Yard: indoor/outdoor bar that has multiple food trucks

  • Vinny’s: Pizza by the slice in EaDo

  • Phoenicia Specialty foods: grocery store with lunch and deli food in store. Lots of vegetarian options.

  • Rodeo Goat: delicious and creative burgers in EaDo. (Warning: the fries “surprise” is chili)

  • Finn Hall: Popular and more upscale food hall in Downtown

  • Underground Hall: Another popular food hall but this one is underground

Breweries

  • 8th Wonder

  • St. Arnold’s

  • True Anomaly

  • Cidercade (not a brewery but a HUGE cider arcade very close to the theater)
